Nobody has been sent down to play the last few games. I wonder if they're going to keep everyone with the main squad for continuity and practice purposes the rest of the year.

Last night was the first time in a long time any of our roster guys played a game for the Gold. Everyone had been with the main squad since the Break. Last night the Gold lost 95-93. Hunter Tyson: 28 points, 8 rebounds, 0 assists, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 11/22 FG, 6/15 3PT, 0/1 FT, +10 in 44 minutes Jalen Pickett: 13 points, 6 rebounds, 13 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 5/15 FG, 0/7 3PT, 2/3 FT, -2 in 42 minutes Braxton Key: 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls, 8/10 FG, 1/2 3PT, 3/3 FT, -10 in 36 minutes I didn't see the game. I was watching the Avalanche and I didn't realize they sent anyone down until you asked this morning. Looks like an efficient shooting game for Tyson, awful shooting game for Pickett, typically efficient for Key. We'll take 13 assists to 1 TO from Pick, though.

We have to hope that Andre Miller is working miracles with Pickett’s handle.

We have to hope that Andre Miller is working miracles with Pickett’s handle. In most of the games I've watched they've mitigated it by: 1. Using Andrew Funk (who is now with the Bulls on a two-way) as a secondary ball handler and having him bring it up the court ~40% of the time 2. Expecting teams to attack Pickett's dribble at the top of the arc and responding by having the wings crash towards him so he has somewhere to go with the ball if he can't get around/through them I don't know that I've seen a substantial improvement in his dribbling through traffic but they've at least managed to keep the turnovers low

Pickett’s theoretical value is primarily as a floor general and passer. If you have to game plan around a still loose handle by getting it out of his hands, you’re not maximizing what is supposedly his strength.

The Gold lost 116-95
Hunter Tyson: 29 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 9/22 FG, 5/11 3PT, 3/3 FT, -24 in 40 minutes
Braxton Key: 18 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 0 steals, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers, 4 fouls, 7/16 FG, 0/2 3PT, 2/5 FT, -18 in 37 minutes
Jalen Pickett: 4 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 1 turnover, 2 fouls, 2/7 FG, 0/2 3PT, 0/0 FT, -23 in 39 minutes
Another game I didn't see live, so I have no insights besides the box scores.
Looks like a solid game overall for Tyson. Poor 2 point shooting but he hit his 3s and seemingly filled up the rest of the stat sheet. Good to see him pulling down double digit rebounds and getting any steals/assists/blocks at all. Hopefully he's becoming less of a spectator when he's not shooting.
Not a good shooting performance for Braxton Key but otherwise it looks like a typical Braxton Key game.
Pick seems to have gone cold shooting. The Gold played this whole game with only 8 bodies since Gillespie/Huff/Strawther are with the Nugs, so you'd expect more of a scoring output from Pickett here. Again his turnover number is low, but again I have no context for how he came by that number.

Starting to think Tyson could become a Trey Lyles type of role player. Not good, but useful. Lyles has remained in the league and is helping the Kings at age 28. Tyson is still 23, and I honestly haven’t seen him play other than SL. But he is 6-8, 215. Lyles is 6-9, 235. If Tyson could add ten pounds of muscle and become a bit more consistent shooting, he could become part of our rotation as early as next season. But Lyles is probably his ceiling.

Tyson is still the worst defender we have by a pretty significant margin. I'd honestly trust Reggie or Gillespie more to defend even guys that are Tyson's own size than Tyson himself. He has to improve by a lot in that area before he'll be ready for a rotation spot.

Rebounding is also part of defense, and he’s showing some ability there. I’m sure he will play SL again, and if we don’t trade him before then, I’ll be watching very closely.

Rebounding is also part of defense, and he’s showing some ability there. I’m sure he will play SL again, and if we don’t trade him before then, I’ll be watching very closely. This was one game. Rebounds, steals, and blocks per game for our 6 NBA guys in the G Tyson: 7.6, 1.2, 0.2 Gillespie: 9.0, 1.9, 0.2 Key: 10.8, 1.6, 1.7 Huff: 7.9, 0.7, 3.4 Pickett: 5.0, 1.4, 0.3 Strawther: 2.5, 0.5, 1.5 (2 games) There's no reason his blocks should be even with Gillespie and lower than Pickett. There's no reason Gillespie should be significantly out-rebounding him. As you can see, even Pick is getting 5 per. Rebounding seems significantly easier in the G-League. Huff is also deficient in this area, especially for his size, which is why I suspect he doesn't get many NBA minutes. His shooting and defense are certainly more than good enough. But beyond the stats the guy is pretty much a turnstyle. Far too slow to stay in front of anyone fast, not strong enough to deal with anyone his size or bigger, often confused or not engaged. Mentally he looks far behind where Watson was from a team defense perspective in the G-League last year, and that's a bad sign because Watson was a baby (experience-wise) who needed his hand held by Jack White the whole year. His sole asset on defense is that he does have pretty quick hands for a guy his size.

The Gold lost 115-110.
Hunter Tyson: 29 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 4 fouls, 11/22 FG, 7/11 3PT, 0/2 FT, -2 in 41 minutes
Jalen Pickett: 22 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers, 5 fouls, 8/20 FG, 4/8 3PT, 1/1 FT, -13 in 40 minutes
Braxton Key: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers, 3 fouls, 5/15 FG, 0/5 3PT, 4/5 FT, -1 in 39 minutes
Another game I didn't watch.
Looks like Tyson and Pick were hot from 3 and ice cold from 2, while Key was ice cold period. Good assist totals for all 3 guys, not a great rebounding game by Key's standard but nice for Tyson and Pickett. Looks like a lot of fouls and turnovers. Looks like Pickett was the guy that had to play the most minutes without the other two since his plus/minus is so much worse.

A small correction, and it's a positive: I had been thinking this was Braxton Key's 4th season, not his 3rd. I simply misread his statline thinking that his playing for both Philly and Detroit his rookie year was actually two separate years.
So that means he is indeed eligible for another two-way contract next year. I had been thinking this was his last year and he might be forced out of the NBA entirely if he couldn't latch onto a full time roster spot next year, but he's a guy I'd gladly offer another two-way to next season. Huff I could go either way on, if they can get younger at that spot then they probably should and if not I'd be fine if he comes back, but I'd love to have Key back.
Gillespie will also be eligible for another two-way, but I think it's pretty clear we'll have to offer him a full time deal to keep him. If Jack White got poached last season there's no way they'll be able to sneak CG through.
All three will be restricted free agents, so we'll have the chance to match any other offers.

Key is a poor 3PT shooter at this point, but seems to do everything else well. Sort of like an early Torrey Craig. I’d keep him, maybe even on a regular contract depending on our other personnel moves. If KCP leaves, we will need more defensive wings on the bench.

Craig is a good comparison but Key is actually quite a bit more athletic and skilled with the ball in his hands in my opinion. If he can ever learn to shoot 3s like Craig did, Key is most definitely an NBA rotation quality guy.
