Pickett - 44% from 3
CG - 9 rebounds per game
Didn’t see those stats coming!
That’s a pretty endorsement of cg from Jamal and DJ - those guys don’t give compliments to just anyone.

I think CG could end up a poor man’s backup version of Brunson. They have one thing in common. 🤔

That 2018 Nova squad had Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo, Collin Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels, Eric Paschall, and Omari Spellman. 7 dudes who made it to the NBA, the first 5 of whom are still in the league.

I swear it feels like the gold are 2-19 They are 6-4 when Gillespie plays, 6-14 when he doesn't. 7-7 overall in the regular season, 5-11 in the Showcase Cup, so they've been a bit better recently (G-League season is split up weird).

Gold won 125-106 tonight.
Strawther played for them for the first time. All six eligible guys played tonight.
Collin Gillespie: 14 points, 11 rebounds, 15 assists, 3 steals, 0 blocks, 2 fouls, 5 turnovers, 5/10 FG, 4/8 3PT, 0/0 FT, +24 in 37 minutes
Jalen Pickett: 19 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 3 fouls, 4 turnovers, 7/12 FG, 1/5 3PT, 1/1 FT, +3 in 34 minutes
Jay Huff: 32 points, 6 rebounds, 0 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 fouls, 1 turnover, 10/16 FG, 1/5 3PT, 7/7 FT, +16 in 27 minutes
Hunter Tyson: 11 points, 4 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 2 fouls, 0 turnovers, 4/9 FG, 3/5 3PT, 0/1 FT, +1 in 29 minutes
Braxton Key: 8 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 0 blocks, 1 foul, 2 turnovers, 3/7 FG, 0/1 3PT, 1/3 FT, +32 in 29 minutes
Julian Strawther: 21 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 fouls, 1 turnover, 5/12 FG, 3/8 3PT, 5/5 FT, +2 in 28 minutes
Those Tyson/Pickett/Strawther plus/minus numbers in a game we won by 19 points are pretty telling. I'm going to assume Strawther was just rusty and that's why he was sent down to begin with.
Excellent games from Gillespie, Key, and Huff.
Gold have another game tomorrow so I won't update the averages quite yet. Will be interesting to see which of the six guys stay with the Gold and which come to LA. Because presumably we're not going to run an 11 man squad for a back to back.

Didn't see the game today but this looks like the best statline so far for Tyson.
Gold won 107-97.
Hunter Tyson: 34 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 12/19 FG, 5/10 3PT, 3/4 FT, +4 in 34 minutes
Braxton Key: 29 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 1 turnover, 5 fouls, 11/19 FG, 2/5 3PT, 3/4 FT, +9 in 36 minutes
Jalen Pickett: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 2 fouls, 3/13 FG, 1/7 3PT, 0/0 FT, +1 in 37 minutes
Looks like a typical solid Braxton Key game.
Ugly shooting night for Pick.

Season average updates (includes both regular and showcase cup games)
Hunter Tyson (25 games): 23.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.2 blocks, 2.4 turnovers, 2.0 fouls, .441 FG, .376 3PT, .869 FT in 37.3 MPG
Jalen Pickett (20 games): 18.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 8.6 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.4 blocks, 2.5 turnovers, 2.3 fouls, .462 FG, .408 3PT, .760 FT in 35.3 MPG
Jay Huff (17 games): 19.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.8 steals, 3.1 blocks, 1.8 turnovers, 2.8 fouls, .577 FG, .380 3PT, .879 FT in 28.7 MPG
Collin Gillespie (11 games): 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 11.4 assists, 1.9 steals, 0.0 blocks, 3.7 turnovers, 2.4 fouls, .446 FG, .349 3PT, .815 FT in 39.3 MPG
Braxton Key (10 games): 22.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, 1.4 blocks, 2.7 turnovers, 2.8 fouls, .521 FG, .257 3PT, .744 FT in 34.8 MPG
Julian Strawther (1 game): 21.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals, 1.0 blocks, 1.0 turnovers. 3.0 fouls, .417 FG, .375 3PT, 1.00 FT in 28.7 MPG
Record when each guy plays Tyson: 12-13 Pickett: 10-10 Huff: 7-10 Gillespie: 7-4 Key: 6-4 Strawther: 1-0
Hands on total team buckets Gillespie: .441 Pickett: 387 Key: .301 Tyson: .253 Huff: .239 Strawther: .171
Hands on buckets is the stat that most captures Gillespie's impact on these games. By comparison, Jokic's hands on buckets stat this year is .442. To refresh, that's the total percentage of team buckets scored while they're on the court either scored or assisted by the player in question. Gillespie's offensive impact on the Gold is similar to Jokic's impact on the Nuggets.
The next highest Nuggets on the list are Murray at .327 and Gordon at .198, so that should also tell you how impactful Pickett has been. Dre has done an excellent job of mitigating his weaknesses. He is a good choice of coach for a team with two point guard prospects for sure.

Funkman to the Bulls

That's a bit of a puzzler. He's maybe an inch taller than CG as a shooting guard (he's listed at 6'5" but he's not close to that; MAYBE 6'3"), can't cover anybody, and he's shooting .416 in the G-League (he is shooting .394 from 3 at least). And I think he'll probably shoot worse elsewhere considering he had a pre-established relationship with both Pickett and Gillespie from college/high school; he won't have that natural chemistry with anyone on the Bulls and they won't be looking to get him shots. This does probably hurt Pickett's effectiveness, though. They often used Funk as a swing guard when he played with Pickett, having him bring the ball up and helping to hide some of Pickett's ball handling troubles. In any case, good for Funk. Seemed like a hard worker and a good kid.

Gold lost 122-110 last night but the lines are interesting
Jay Huff: 18 points, 6 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 8 blocks (!), 3 turnovers, 4 fouls, 7/13 FG, 2/3 FG, 1/2 FT, +0 in 32 minutes
Julian Strawther: 28 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 0 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers, 4 fouls, 9/23 FG, 6/15 3PT, 2/3 FT, -16 in 28 minutes
Jalen Pickett: 14 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 0 blocks, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls, 7/17 FG, 0/7 3PT, 0/0 FT, -13 in 39 minutes
Collin Gillespie: 22 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls, 7/15 FG, 4/8 3PT, 2/2 FT, -9 in 39 minutes
8 blocks for Huff, decent shooting, only 6 boards.
Inefficient shooting for Strawther.
Awful, awful shooting night for Pick.
Solid all-around night for CG.

Was 7-10 on 2’s. Personally, I’m skeptical and think he’s a homeless man’s Miller. We need to figure out how to unload Pickett and give his spot on roster to CG next year. Also, Straw is just a volume chucker at this point. 28 FGAs in 28 minutes? Ugh.

You can’t draw conclusions from one G league game just like you can’t draw conclusions from one NBA game.

Pickett is shooting .459/.387/.760 in 21 total G-League games. He's been colder recently but he's still shooting fine overall. I worry more about his ability to get his shots off than whether or not they're going in. I still have doubts about his ability to shake off NBA defenders, get to spots with the ball, or dribble out of trouble in general. If he never becomes an NBA rotation guy it will be his ball skills that are the culprit and not his shooting, passing, defense, mentality, or conditioning.
And Strawther I think is just trying to play his way into game shape. He missed like 6 weeks, didn't he? 2 G-League games and some NBA garbage time is all he's had.

Agreed — its been obvious to me since last summer that Pickett doesn’t have a good enough handle and it’s either improving or he won’t make it in the NBA.
