Nuggets in 4 over the Heat

Game Thread will be created tomorrow. Nuggets have no excuse to lose this series. The Heat have no one to guard Jokic 1 on 1. Bam is too small. If you use Bam as a roamer you have to guard Jokic with either Kevin Love or Jimmy Butler. Key to the series is the Heat 3 point shooting. Nuggets need to be smart and disciplined. The Heat cannot beat the Nuggets with 2s in this series. I hope Malone understands that. Agree, can't let Martin, Robinson, and Struse get wide-open shots. Have to be smart switching as often as we can, except for Murray onto Butler, I'd almost live with Jokic on Butler, give him space and make him score over you.

Nosferatu has not done even the bare minimum in promoting small market teams and atypical superstars like Jokic and has nobody to blame but himself.

I'm worried Erik Spoelstra is going to vastly outcoach Malone ...Spoelstra is a great coach (top 3 for sure) and a major reason why the Heat are in the NBA Finals I think coaching matters a lot over the course of a season, as they have all kinds of things to manage, from hiring/retaining a coaching staff and working out roles for all of those guys, to developing young players and providing feedback to the front office about them,, to developing team routines for games, practices, film, travel; they have to manage egos and pecking order, figure out PT, manage injuries and working guys back in, figure out many injury replacements etc. There is a lot to do over the course of 8, 9 or more months. At this point its on the margins. Spoelstra will pull out a full court press a few times and the Nuggets will expect it. He’ll go to a zone and the Nuggets know its coming. The Heat can double Jokic from one direction or another and he’s seen it all. Malone has been very good in the playoff run. He knows what he’s doing. I wasn’t convinced the same was true of Joe Mazzulla when it came to a long playoff run. It’s on the players and it’ll basically be make or miss. I do think there is a bit of a decision to make as to whether to give Jackson bench minutes as having enough ballhandling on the court is important IMO since the Heat are going to try to generate turnovers. This series will test the players in some ways. When the Heat blitz Murray and double Jokic and force the Nuggets to move the ball, will the other guys come hard to the ball and catch the ball cleanly and make smart decisions and avoid turnovers. And make or miss is 90% on the players. On balance, I don’t think this is Spoelstra vs. Malone.

unfortunately for the Heat, Spo can't coach Bam to be a better Jokic defender or coach the Heat to be a taller team and prevent the rebound disparity which is sure to happen.

Nosferatu has not done even the bare minimum in promoting small market teams and atypical superstars like Jokic and has nobody to blame but himself. I think this applies far more to ESPN, which is the dominant player in the NBA entertainment business, with its pre- and post-game studio shows, plus extensive coverage on SportsCenter, NBA Today, First Take, Around the Horn, This Just In, Pardon the Interruption, and its internet coverage. I’m sure there is some consultation between the league and its media partners but its not like the NBA is running Disney. The league is more in charge of its schedule, and the Nuggets have had plenty of national TV games in the last few years. The NBA and its media partners have made a ton of cash following the “star” and “glamour” model put into place starting with Jordan, as well as the TMZish soap opera and/or train wreck aspect of modern media coverage. Money talks.

Nosferatu has not done even the bare minimum in promoting small market teams and atypical superstars like Jokic and has nobody to blame but himself. And we've all been criticizing this for years. Every time a friend of mine who watches other NBA teams or college ball has their first "Jokic experience", they'll send me a message like "have I just been missing out? Was that a fluke game or is this normal Jokic?" The dude isn't really marketable if your strategy is dunks and blocks and logo threes. But if you show what Jokic is good at, fans are like "yo this is amazing" and they want to see more. The league has really dropped the ball on that. Hopefully this postseason will make them rethink it.

Hopefully this postseason will make them rethink it. I don’t know. The sports marketplace in the US is so crowded that most consumers are basically casuals who don’t know/understand the game that much. Its different in the parts of the world where 90% of sports is soccer and because the sport has people’s undivided attention — and many grew up playing the game — the fans understand the game a lot more. So the NBA is still marketing dunks and long threes because they are the flashy plays that draw oohs and ahs from the casuals. I doubt that changes.

Gilbert Arenas was talking with JJ and offered his explanation as to why Jokic isn't as celebrated as other stars, and it's the usual spiel we all heard 1000 times before: he doesn't have fancy handles, flashy dunks or he doesn't shoot 3s like Steph. and his social media presence is non-existent. and then he began to completely contradict himself (which JJ didn't pick up on, sadly) by saying if Jokic was wearing a Knicks jersey, his game would be better appreciated.
so it isn't that Jokic's game is unappealing to casuals, it's that Denver does not have the massive NY media market that would have broadcasted to the world incessantly that Jokic is a brilliant player.

If the Heat start small: Jokic on Bam Gordon on Butler KCP on Martin MPJ on Struss Murray on Vincent If the Heat start big: Jokic on Bam Gordon on Butler MPJ on Love KCP on Struss Murray on Vincent You think their is a scenario they don't start Martin? He was their best player in ECF and really deserved ECF MVP. I agree that Martin was great but I don't know how you can start a 6'5" guy at the 4 against Jokic, Gordon, and MPJ. Kevin Love and even possibly Cody Zeller will have to play minutes in this series. They can't run a frontcourt of just Bam, Jimmy, Martin, Highsmith, and Robinson.

"it's just time" = we're in cap hell, our best player is a year younger than Uncle Jeff and Draymond is leaving because we just gave a max to a player who probably isn't as good as Jordan Clarkson.
good luck to the Dubs on attempting to replicate their previous success.

So in other words, money. And let’s be honest here — the Nuggets have never had really huge popularity even here in Denver. The NBA is marketed in the US as the “urban” sport — its basically counter programming to the suburban/rural/working class appeal of the NFL, the white folks nostalgia appeal of baseball, the niche appeal of hockey (which is big at the youth level among the affluent white suburban demographic that is large in the Denver area), the “guys who play golf” market for TV golf, etc. Since Denver and its surrounding area fits so well into the culture and marketing of the NFL, MLB and the NHL, the NBA has tough time breaking through into big popularity even here where we have a team (unlike, say, Missouri).

Denver has a problem with oversaturation when it comes to professional sports teams. too many options, not enough eyeballs. Indiana, Oklahoma and Utah all have majority white suburban/working class/rural populations and have zero problems fostering rabid basketball fanbases.

poor fami's out here like Tom Cruise in Minority Report trying to keep up with everything Teams and sports I follow: Combat sports NFL (Broncos) MLB (Rockies) NBA (Nuggets) NHL (Avalanche) NLL (Mammoth) CFL (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) That's it. I care about those six teams and combat sports and little else. No soccer, racing, tennis, golf, cricket, etc. I don't watch college sports, I don't follow any women's teams, and for teams outside my favorites I only watch in the playoffs generally. I like rugby okay but I never really followed it closely. When we had the Crush (AFL, 2003-2008) I loved them, but the league didn't survive the real estate bubble. Indoor football is still a thing but back then the players were making six figures and playing on NBC in NBA/NHL arenas; now they're making 250 bucks a game and playing in 5000 seat barns in mostly small cities. When we had the Outlaws (MLL, outdoor/field lacrosse, 2006-2020) I loved them, but the league got absorbed by a better-funded touring only league (Premier Lacrosse League) during COVID. There is talk the touring league will go back to home markets in 2024, so maybe we'll get the Outlaws back, but that remains to be seen.
