His base will support him no matter what, and the people who hate him aren't changing their minds no matter what.

The very few undecided or independent voters will make the difference, and being a convicted felon can only hurt with that crowd.

The thin margins of votes that are actually up for grabs are why Trump showed up to the libertarian party convention asking for their nomination and got booed hilariously for 20 minutes. Because those 1.8M people that voted LP last election could easily turn the electoral map in one direction or the other. Trump knows he needs the support bad enough to risk exactly what happened: an embarrassing, extended sequence of Trump being booed by people he showed up to court.

He's an authoritarian and he showed up to a libertarian convention asking for support. That's how much he's hurting right now. Whether you agree with libertarian values or not, one thing that everyone should know about them is they don't take kindly to dictators, wannabe or otherwise.
