look at that, another steal for Boston
if Sam was wearing mustard and ketchup colors (we need a rebrand), there would be a horde of medicore Eastern conference teams tripping over themselves offering him 20+m a year.
take a lap rock.

I thought the 2nd apron made it literally impossible to remain relevant

2nd apron makes it hard to make moves. Different teams have taken different philosophies to how to build around that -- the Suns decided to just smash through it with an overpriced "Big 3" and a first round exit, and now they're super fucked asset-wise. The Celtics were super deep before the 2nd apron penalties started, so they might be able to just weather it and keep their guys because bird rights are the one thing you can do to add major salary with the 2nd apron. Some teams are ducking it entirely. Nuggets made moves to duck it this season while trying to shore up some key weaknesses (Saric + Westbrook) but also creating different weaknesses (Braun + Strawther is unlikely to be as good as KCP + Braun).

So our plan was to move away from what won us a ring? Staying under the 2nd apron makes that easier. I still dont understand why we wouldnt just add to what we already had with picks and players on rookie deals and MLE x2 instead.
Calvin either didnt like that the team was stil TC and wanted flexibility to «make moves» or it was purely financial

No reason we couldnt have been super deep, like the Celtics. Look at the roster we started the 2022 season with. And we would stil have had 2x MLE + a bunch of picks. So even with the loss of BB
But that costs. A lot.

I absolutely think we made mistakes. Using the MLE for Reggie was a failure. Extending Zeke looks like an obvious failure. The specific guys Calvin went and picked in the early 2nd and then gave roster spots to were a failure. But it's possible to be a failure without it either being "trying to be less like TC" or "just being cheap". Just bad talent evaluation.
If 2023 Booth had gone and gotten Andre Jackson Jr and Trayce Jackson-Davis (both guys I had on my list for those early 2nds, who were still available) I think this offseason would have looked a lot different.

We wasnt 2nd apron last summer
Could we have signed Saric and matched KCP afterwards? This summer?

Completely agree that Boothe decision to draft Pickett, sign Reggie, ans give votnrsct extension to Naji were absolutley horrible and handicapped us in our dealings with KCP. Both was asleep at the wheel last year.

We wasnt 2nd apron last summer Could we have signed Saric and matched KCP afterwards? This summer? No. Since Saric was under contract during the season, he couldn't be signed until the 24-25 free agency period opened up (I believe a player who wasn't under contract last season may have been signable during the playoffs, using last year's cap / exceptions, but I'd have to look at the details of exactly how that works. And either way, the Nuggets didn't have the TPMLE because of using it on Reggie.) Using the TPMLE automatically triggers a restriction that doesn't allow the team to go over the second apron for the remainder of the season, so signing Saric made it impossible to keep KCP at anything close to what he was offered.

Okay so 1x MLE instead of two if we keep KCP then

Completely agree that Boothe decision to draft Pickett, sign Reggie, ans give votnrsct extension to Naji were absolutley horrible and handicapped us in our dealings with KCP. Both was asleep at the wheel last year. I never saw it with Pickett, but there is no world in which you say that a particular draft pick in the 30’s is “absolutely horrible.” Most of those guys will not be NBA players. And check out what has happened this summer — a lot of teams are giving 2nd round picks multi-year contracts because of the restrictions of the new CBA and the fact there is a “2nd round pick exception” that went into effect last summer. I’m all for bitching about draft mistakes but I try to leave it to when your team squanders an asset with significant value (13th pick in 2017) or uses a pick on a really questionable guy while passing over a guy that seems legitimately likely to hit (go back and look at Desmond Bane’s college shooting stats — they make Strawther’s look by comparison like those of a guy with zero proven shooting ability). It’s fashionable to bash the Reggie Jackson signing, but in actuality he provided the Nuggets with something they needed last season — a guy to eat minutes at backup PG. He played every game, filled the role, and sometimes was actually good. It’s fine for the Nuggets to move on from him and decide they need something different from a backup PG, but Jackson was actually not bad given the options available to the Nuggets. It’s good to remind oneself — the Nuggets won 57 regular season games with Reggie Jackson playing every game and they needed Jackson to do that. It’s possible they win just as many with some other bench PG plucked off the NBA scrap heap but it’s also possible they don’t. And his contract was no big problem — they used some worthless 50’s picks to dump his contract. Like what you see from Trey Alexander so far? They didn’t need a pick in the 50’s to get him and its entirely possible his agent sent out word he didn’t want to be drafted in the 50’s. He may have liked the Nuggets. I didn’t like the Nnaji contract but it could still turn out well. He’s getting a 2nd chance with the Nuggets and may turn out to be useful this season.
