Sooo Imane Khelif was in fact a man, with XY chromosone and inverted testicles. HUH Yep! Again, nope. You missed my post about it: Sooo Imane Khelif was in fact a man, with XY chromosone and inverted testicles. HUH I tracked this claim down the other day when it came out. The source is absolute bullshit. The article most people are going from is reduxx.info/algerian-boxer-imane-khelif-has-xy-chromosomes-and-testicles-french-algerian-medical-report-admits/ . It links to its own source, which is lecorrespondant.net/imane-khelif-ni-ovaires-ni-uterus-mais-des-testicules/ -- an apparently super obscure French blogger on a super obscure French blog. Dude has only written about one article a quarter, and there's no particular indication of even average journalistic standards, just weird muckraking (past articles include one claiming far-left black-bloc protesters aren't violent, just misunderstood, and another one claiming that Ukraine and many other countries prefer Russian tanks invading them to American ideology.) The "evidence" he posts about Khelif is 2 screenshots covering 3 paragraphs of a French-language document that describes the XY chromosome + inverted testicles medical condition -- but never names Khelif. There's no full document to check. There's no date indicated on the document. There's no indication as to why this obscure French blogger was the chosen source for this leak. There's nothing here that would let us distinguish between "this is Khelif's medical records" and "this is an obscure case study of a totally different patient from the 1980s or something". There's no document chain of custody that would let us distinguish between "genuine leak from this specific hospital that examined Khelif" versus "forgery created by this guy himself, or planted by a nefarious org like the KGB or Mossad, in order to stir s**t" (see also the Killian memos.) So, no, we don't have any new, credible evidence for Khelif being "in fact a man". We just have a possible propaganda piece with no credibility at all.

Don’t we have enough commentators pointing out how bat s**t crazy Trump and his supporters are? It doesn’t matter and only serves to entrench them. John Oliver isn’t making people change their vote. Trump is a rich, elite, narcissistic moron. That is basically a description straight from his Wikipedia page and is basically acknowledged by everyone, including those that vote for him. And it doesn’t matter. Actually we don’t. Have enough commentators, that is. The reason it “doesn’t matter” is we have two mega-wealthy immigrants, Rupert Murdoch and Elon Musk, who are actively misinforming and disinforming the public as pro-fascist propagandists, all for the self-interest of enhancing their wealth and power. Americans are being inundated with right wing commentary and have effectively been brainwashed. We shouldn’t lay down for them. We ALL have to become “commentators” in our own little way. They’d rather we shut up and watch NBA players dribbling. I think you know what I mean. Well, maybe you’re right. But I have watched otherwise reasonable people choose to ignore their own sensibility and vote for this s**t gibbon…3 times now. I would say that we don’t need more…we need different, better commentary.

Whatever point anyone wants to make the election was decided on two things, which is what I said all along.
The perception of the economy is that it is very weak because people don't have a ton of money and things at the supermarket cost a lot of money. The perception of illegal immigration is that millions of them are coming into the country and raping/murdering innocent people. Combine that with Harris being a non-white woman and she never had a chance at winning this election.
You guys believe way too much in the American people. Most people are 1 or more of the following: racist/sexist/homophobic/islamophobic/transphobic. And people can hide that very easily. But when you have a vote and nobody needs to know about it, you can express that.
All that being said, the DNC ran a terrible campaign and deserved to lose. They should be embarrassed and have no chance of winning again in 2028 outside of a pandemic.

Brainwashed? No question. Trumpism a cult? No question. Too bad Charles Manson is gone. Smarter and more peace-loving than Trump. Jim Jones-like? His followers sure liked Koolaid.

I would say that we don’t need more…we need different, better commentary. That is certainly partly true. Too much attention in this society toward wedge “social war” issues, and too little attention to domestic and foreign policy issues, economic issues, and issues concerning our institutional corruption, whether in the justice system reaching our highest court, or through the corrupting influence of K-Street and money in politics. Abortion is an important issue. People do seem to care about immigration, though it could have been solved long ago if not for demagogues who wanted to use it as an election issue. But the most important thing we learn is that the public is ignorant of economic reality, foreign affairs, or the governmental rot. We are an economically illiterate society and pay very little attention to such issues. Too much focus on unimportant stuff like the trans talk going on here this very day. It distracts from the main issues that presidents and legislatures impact.

Not saying no one ever votes on that. I live in Stevens Co. KS it's 40% hispanic. Two of the coaches on my sons team are Hispanic. They all voted for Trump, the County voted 87% in favor for Trump. The school held an election. The students are closer to 50% hispanic Trump won 200 votes to 22 votes. Most people who have an issue with immigration have an issue with the unffettered flow of it with no idea who is and isn't coming in. Most will freely acknowledge that the majority are coming here for a better life and for economic benefits. That doesn't change the fact that a much smaller % are criminals that commit crimes, crimes that wouldn't happen or happen as frequently if the border was much better regulated. Take that for what it is. I'm not here to cause a stir, or upset anyone, just my thoughts.

Again, nope. You missed my post about it: The reduxx article literally has screenshots of the medical report. Now could they doctored, sure, but there is no evidence of that. You presuming the journalist is lying in this case. Read my post carefully. The Reduxx article, and the source they got it from, had 2 screenshots totaling 3 paragraphs of French-language text. Look at what's actually in those screenshots. A description of the medical condition. But no date, no name of Khelif, no evidence that this is a report ABOUT her specifically. (EDIT: you can use a tool like translate.yandex.com/en/ocr to translate the text in the screenshots. But also you can just look at the French and see the word "Khelif" doesn't appear and neither does anything that looks like a date.) If an obscure blogger none of us has ever heard of claims to have a bombshell story proving something on a cultural firestorm issue, they need to provide far better evidence than screenshots that describe a medical condition but don't even name the person it's supposedly a diagnosis of. We need a full document with a clear chain of custody, that explicitly names the patient, that has dates, and that can be compared to other documents produced by the same institution. That's just standard journalistic practice. We have none of that here. We just have screenshots that describe this condition, and then an allegation that "this is Khelif's medical report" from some nobody who we have no reason to trust.

Whatever point anyone wants to make the election was decided on two things, which is what I said all along. The perception of the economy is that it is very weak because people don't have a ton of money and things at the supermarket cost a lot of money. The supermarket thing is real from an American perception standpoint. I don’t think our food is expensive by longer term historic standards — as longer term humans have used maybe half of their resources to get food — but 21st century Americans are used to cheap food because we have incredible natural resources together with cheap labor compared to lots of the “wealthy countries.” Covid affected both so Americans recently have been pissed off about grocery store prices. The other big economy thing is that a big slice of the electorate has been hit hard by housing cost inflation. Some of that is covid related but some is longer term construction disruption caused in part by the 2008 subprime mortgage meltdown and some reaction to it. I agree that Americans shouldn’t be overestimated in terms of information and critical thinking skills. I am in my 60’s and I’ve always seen the people/culture of this country as defined way more by hard working/workers than by intellectualism. And my people too mostly fit in that, as they (the families of my grandparents) were uneducated peasants who immigrated to the US around 1905. Otherwise, I wouldn’t read too much into the election. National elections in the modern era are won and lost on the margins, and are often decided by factors beyond the particular candidates or their “policy” views. All that being said, the DNC ran a terrible campaign and deserved to lose. They should be embarrassed and have no chance of winning again in 2028 outside of a pandemic. I think Harris ran a good campaign and the outcome was mostly determined by factors outside of her control.

my first bit of post-election data analysis, based on www.nbcnewyork.com/decision-2024/2024-voter-turnout-election-demographics-trump-harris/5960526/ , which compares 2020 and 2024 vote percentages by different demographics: Trump is leading a genuine political realignment. He's a populist, not a classical conservative. We all know this, but then act like older expectations for a conservative-versus-liberal race should apply. Compared to 2020, Trump: - gained among all non-white races of voters, and lost white voters - gained among women as a whole (lost slightly among both white and black women, but gained more among latina and other women) - gained among younger and middle-age voters, and lost seniors - gained among less-than-bachelors-degree voters, and lost among the most educated voters - gained among "independent" voters - gained massively among first-time voters A lot of the partisan narratives don't take seriously the populist angle here. A lot of them think about topics like race the way white progressives think about race, and get confused when non-white not-super-progressive working-class voters don't actually think that way. A lot of them see the loss of "character matters" religious-right NeverTrump voters as fatal, and miss the working class and young voter shifts. In essence, they don't get why Trump showing up to a rally in a garbage truck resonated with a subset of the population.

That's pretty crazy actually. What determined the election were first time uneducated voters. They came out in droves for Trump.

Trump "only" gained 2.3m votes from 2020. the Democrats hemorrhaged 15m votes from 2020. it's all about turnout and enthusiasm. liberals say the MAGA movement is a minority which is true in a vacuum, but when you have something like 30% of the country that self identify as MAGA and will follow you to the ends of the earth, you're starting the game with a 20 point lead. Kamala was always playing catch up, and she greatly exasperated her disadvantage by chasing an electorate that did not exist (the so-called moderate republican).
at the end, Biden bears majority responsibility for Ruth Bader Ginsburging his party because his senility has not yet reached the part of his brain responsible for hubris and narcissism. Trump had a decade to hone his message, Kamala had a few months.

Trump "only" gained 2.3m votes from 2020. the Democrats hemorrhaged 15m votes from 2020. We don't have the final vote counts yet. Not even close. When I checked a little while ago, California was 54% counted and had 9.5m votes assigned, meaning there are about 9m more to go. Between other western states (Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada) I came up with another 4m uncounted votes. Another million between NY and IL. When you add up what we know hasn't yet been counted, it looks like turnout this year will be very close to 2020 or maybe even higher. And there are more outstanding votes in blue states than in red states. My loose stare-and-don't-really-calculate estimate is that Harris is going to finish over 75m, possibly as high as 78m (Biden was 81m) while Trump is going to finish around 80m (up 6m from 2020.)

I don’t think Harris’ outreach to the “so-called moderate republican” hurt her candidacy. One cannot at this point use raw vote totals to draw conclusions. There are something like 12 million outstanding votes in the west coast states (and more elsewhere). Then there are the millions more that don’t get cast because the states are not in play in the presidential election and there are not even truly contested statewide elections for Senate or Governor.

God Damn electoral college has skewed everyone’s perspective!
I still contend more registered voters support Harris than Trump. If we had a national popular vote, she’d have won. People in deep blue states like CA and NY stayed home, as they knew she’d win the state and their votes don’t really matter. If it instead was national popular vote, they make the effort to vote because in a tied election (per polling) their votes matter.
12 million votes have yet to be counted, mainly from deep blue states. So it will tighten up.
So many pundits are divining what this means and how people want change, anti-incumbency, yada yada. When in fact, a majority of citizens very likely favor Harris, but our system is like a funhouse mirror. Distorting results of EC. Oh well!

There is no question that Trump’s crassness and vulgarity is central to his political brand and it’s been effective, although it shouldn’t be forgotten that he lost the popular vote handily in 2016 and won the election through an unprecedented electoral college inside straight that no computer model predicted, and then lost the 2020 election handily to a 78 year old Joe Biden (OK, he was a couple of weeks short of 78). I recently read a magazine profile of Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who is now a slightly disabled stroke survivor. Long before he had a stroke, Fetterman was known in part for his sloppy, casual clothes and periodic verbal expletives despite having a Masters degree from Harvard (and an MBA before that). Some political aides have thought there was a performative aspect to Fetterman’s public persona, although it seemed to fit him naturally since he grew up in less than glamorous York, Pennsylvania and was a football player through college. I don’t know if Trump’s garbage truck bit “resonated” although I suppose it was on brand.
