Perspective, rock. We also played the best team in the conference in round one, because our seed wasn't great, because we had to deal with chubby for half the season. Had we had a full season with that team, we would have been a top 2-3 seed, played an easier opponent in round one, and would have probably made it to the WCF. At which point we would have been healthier and you never know what could have happened.

I came up with a dumb question after reading an article by the Knicks beat writer Alan Hahn, he was outlining the Knicks strategy for this year, which was basically sign vet minimum guys to a one year deal to complete their roster for this season. Next year they will have only 42 million in committed payroll on only 3 players, and that doesn't include Shumpert. They are banking on this to land their 3rd star caliber player.
Here is where my question comes in. Isn't there a very good chance that the salary cap will go down quite a bit next year? Even though they left it at last years level for this season, next year it will be based off of the revenue that is generated in this shortened season with several unhappy fans running around, won't it? I am not sure how it will work, and that's why I am asking.

The salary cap is based off of projected full-season revenue.
In a shortened season, contracts are shrunk based on the number of games missed; the cap numbers are still the full numbers, though.
Still, the Knicks would have to bank on the cap being high enough to squeeze in a third star along with Melo/Amare, Shumpert, Balkman, and 7 min contracts. That's about 50 mil, so they'll need the cap to be in the 65-68 range to offer a near-max deal; if it's more like 60-62, they're going to have to put together a boatload of exceptions instead.
Personally, I think their best option is going to be a Billups trade, either directly for Chris Paul, or for a trade exception. I don't see the cap being quite high enough to let them just outright sign a guy for max money.

I'm sure Billups is the best offer Nola will get for CP3

One problem is that the Hornets are still owned by the NBA. Sure they could still conceivably make a big trade like that, but even I have a hard time seeing that actually happen. Especially when they're trying to sell the team. A team without Chris Paul isn't nearly as valuable.

That article said that Balkman would be an amnesty victim next year. I just want them to suck next year, so the pick that they owe the Nuggets in 2014 will be better.

Replacing Balkman with a min-contract guy saves them about 700k in cap space. That's not real likely to make a difference.

Especially when they're trying to sell the team. A team without Chris Paul isn't nearly as valuable. Wouldn't it have to take the rest of the leagues owners approval since they are all part owners of the team? I think last year when they made the Landry deal, Cuban and a few other owners were pissed off because they included 3 million in cash in the trade or something like that. Although in this situation they obviously didn't get league wide approval, so I

I hope the NBA forbids them from playing before March even if they get out of their contracts. They agreed to the deal beforehand

Nene wants 5 years, just watch. He will get paid about 13-15 million a year. espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/5-on-5-free-agents-111128/what-top-nba-free-agents-really-worthMost of the people in this article think Nene is worth $13 million or more over 5 years. The fact that we can give the 5th year and higher increases in salary, should at least give Denver some return for Nene, as I imagine he won't want to sign somewhere for only 4 seasons. Unless he plans to build his church in 4 seasons, of course.
