personally i dont care but others might. should we make it public.
meaning (a) if people ask, i can post who smited/exalted whom or (b) just post the daily karma list. either one. doesnt matter. but if people want it private (as it is now) i can keep it that way.

If you make this public, it needs to stop when the season starts. During the offseason when it is slow it is humorous, but I don't want to come onto the board when there is legitimate Nuggets news and have to sort through a bunch of people jockeying for some meaningless "reputation" number. I guess karma replaces running up post count as the key way for one to feel important....

I dont even see why we have it, but i may be a little bias cause i have like a -10. I thought this board was supposed to be a place where Nuggets Fans can talk about the Nuggets not some circuis.

I figure, making it public (at least temporarily) will discourage people from gaming the system too much... or, at the very least, the threat of people's votes being made public will calm down the "hey, I'm gonna vote Cara all the way to -138" people.
The system is a joke, and it should be treated like one. Making votes public just makes it that much clearer -- those who care too much will quickly be exposed for caring too much.

Just like egroves said, I would hate when the season starts to be sifting through a bunch of posts that have nothing else but a smiley face and "And 1" posted. Funny during the off-season but will definitely be annoying down the road.

So I guess we've got a few separate questions:
1) should karma votes be made public, either as a matter of habit, or just on request?
2) should excessive And-1 posts be grounds for giving someone a huge karma penalty and/or a warning (and, if they keep it up, a temporary ban)?
3) should we even keep the karma system running?
You've already heard my thoughts on (1) - if someone is abusing the system, make it public and let the rest of the people on the board decide how to use the system in response. If they abuse it too many times, give them a warning.
With respect to (2), remember, people have said "good post" after good posts for a long time. If they start saying "and 1" instead, that doesn't bother me -- it gets the message across just as well. The only thing to worry about is if "and 1" becomes like a komodo dragon post -- just appearing randomly in the middle of a thread with no connection to what's being discussed. If it gets out of hand, tell people to knock it off, and if they don't, hit them with the "banned" stick.
For (3), I think the karma system is getting a lot of airtime right now because we're all bored and it's new, and a lot of people are playing around with it. The novelty should wear off long before the season starts, and when there's something worthwhile to talk about, I think most of us will start talking ball again. We'll see when we get into the preseason, but I don't think it'll be a problem.

Just remove the feature if it's getting in they way of the proper functioning of the board. I don't care, I'll keep going with my komodo dragons, girls I dated and whatever off topic things I can come up with... Seriously, at times I wonder how some of the people here manage to take a dump... Talk about air tight asses... We surely need the season to start very quick if we're going from June to October discussing karma. |
