The whole convention has been great. Due to how far we've fallen since Obama, I have cried regularly while watching. Please god, can we be rid of this menace presidency ASAP. If Trump somehow wins, or refuses to leave, the United States will have ceased to exist.

I just watched Obama's speech from last night, tears flowing throughout. Good god, was he great. Trump isn't qualified to lick his azz clean. His speech was excellent, and covered all the bases. How in god's name did this country fall so far and so hard? How have we gone from The World Leader to being a total laughingstock, which would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous to every living thing? To go from one of the best of all time presidents to by FAR the worst. How I wish this fukking virus wasn't so out-of-control thanks to fukking Trump, because I planned to work in my retirement as hard as I could to defeat the motherfukker. The last two days I've done something unprecedented, on a fixed income I have made numerous political contributions to Biden, the Democrats, the governor's races, the senate races, and the Lincoln Project.
My cousin's wife has told me in all seriousness they will both commit suicide if Trump somehow wins. I am trying to talk them out of it but they're quite serious. One thing is for sure, if Trump wins it means the end of the United States of America. NEVER has an election meant so much, and I have to admit, people who choose to vote third party or not vote are complicit. This election is black and white. There is only one choice, and votes must be hand-delivered as soon as humanly possible. The evil which resides in the White House and his zombie apocalypse followers must be shunned for the rest of their natural lives unless they show true repentance. Otherwise, there is little hope for their humanity.

The convention has been all good, showing the diversity and goodness of America, opposite of the cynical and sinister dishonesty of Trump and his followers/enablers. This election isnât GOP versus Democrat. Itâs anti-democratic authoritarianism versus preservation of democracy. Itâs an existential moment for America. An urgent moment, as Obama so eloquently put it.
Iâm 66, nearly 67. TNF is even older than me, I think. We implore the younger people who read our posts to take this seriously. Very seriously. Democracy is on the ballot. FFS, who would have ever thought this would ever happen here! I remember 1968 when I was 14 and took up the entire hour in 8th grade English class arguing with the prim and proper Republican teacher, Miss Quinn, about the Vietnam war. I was a news junkie even then. Watching Uncle Walter and the CBS Evening News every night. I knew our country had no business being there, was killing millions of southeast Asians because âwe couldâ. It was evil. It was immoral. It was wrong. It divided the country between hawks and doves. Families got torn apart. 1968 was the most turbulent year in America that I recall as a kid.
1968 was nothing compared to 2020. If we make the same mistake we made in 1968 (electing Nixon which prolonged the war all the way to the mid-70âs), or the mistake we made in 2004 (re-electing GW Bush despite his war of choice based on a lie, which was well understood by that point), or 2016 (allowing a corrupt vulgarian win the WH on an âinside straightâ through the electoral college anachronism), to occur once again in 2020, we will get what America deserves. A decent into an abyss.
This is the most existential moment in my lifetime for this country. TNF, I really hope you talk your cousin and wife out of their suicidal thoughts, maybe get them some counseling help. I do realize that if Trump wins or through his henchmen. steals the election, millions will feel like their lives are over. So unnecessary, especially considering the alternatives. Biden and Kamala arenât the top choices Iâd have made, but they AND THE TEAM THEY WOULD ASSEMBLE IN THEIR ADMINISTRATION would be 1 million times better than what we have. I put that last phrase in caps because it will take a massive team effort to undo the damage Trump has caused already, and with the Senate turning blue, reforms to our corrupt system that suppresses voters and minorities is going to happen. And our SCOTUS will be saved from decades of far right ideologues controlling it.
So tonight is the last night of convention. Will watch it and hope millions of others do and get inspired to, as Barack said, save our democracy! Itâs your country, after all.

(FYI born 4-1-54 #209 in the draft lottery (Lotteries for Nam) I think we're not too far apart) Yes, this is THE election. Anyone who chooses not to vote or goes third party will have the blood of the world on their hands. Save your purity for someone less harmful, like a McCain.

I remember being #281 in the lottery, and sure enough the table shows the exact same number! Born 12/30/53. So I stand corrected. Iâm older!

I have a funny story regarding the day of the lottery. I was living in Turner Hall dorm in Greeley that year, which has room for four per room. I had experienced quite a turnover in roommates. One I'd met in a class and we were becoming good friends. I came home and happily proclaimed I was #209 !!! he said, "That's my number too". It turned out we had both been born on the exact same day (not merely the same day of the year). I have honestly never met another person born on the exact same day again, and I'd bet 99% of people out there have never met one. It turned out he was a total azzhole to his girlfriend, so our friendship was quite brief, but not before he "turned me on to" lots of good music, including David Bowie.
Since the war was winding down, I was assured I wouldn't be going, as were you with your good number.

I agree 100% !!! What a speech !!! Joe was not my first choice, and neither was Kamala, but they're making this a moment we can all be proud of. Now is the time for the fight of our lives, because the existence of every living thing is now on the line. There is only one choice, and it is the most obvious choice in the history of US electoral politics.
GO JOE !!!

Biden gave a fine speech, but with the "conventions" not being conventions, the whole thing is terrible television and I suspect almost all of the viewers will be partisans. I don't think the non-conventions will make any difference at all this election cycle (and it's probably debatable whether they do in general at this point).

I don't think the non-conventions will make any difference at all this election cycle (and it's probably debatable whether they do in general at this point). Disagree. The four day event turned into âmust-see TVâ far more than expected. And it was well-produced. Actually, more compelling TV than the typical live convention, so much so that pundits are suggesting future convention formats be forever changed. We actually got a chance to see every convention speech, which rarely happens with a real convention. The roll call event was widely praised as far more interesting than the typical floor roll call. Yeah, no floor demonstrations, no balloons. That stuff is passĂ© anyway. As to who watches, itâs probably the same partisan demos who watch regular conventions. HOWEVER, this era is the social media and YT era. Millions will be viewing the speeches by the Obamas, Kamala, and Biden over the coming days and weeks on YouTube, and seeing the highlight âviralâ clips on Twitter and FB. There was compelling TV and it will be seen over the course of this campaign. I doubt Trump and GOP will be able to match the viral moments from the DNC speeches. This virtual DNC should make a difference with the persuadables among more traditional center-right Republicans and independents. You could see the strategy throughout the event. Lots of Repub presence, from common people who voted for Trump in 2016 and wonât again, to John Kasich and a tribute to John McCain. Umm, progressive werenât wooed, with AOC only getting 90 seconds, but Bernie gave a good speech and the left will turn out, in the view of DNC and Biden staffers, which is why they tailored their sales pitch more to woo the center. The polls in coming days should be very interesting.

As an addendum to my above rebuttal to scooter, I forgot the #1 benefit from this convention. BIDEN LIVES!! He was so lucid, passionate, and articulate in his speech delivery that it totally took away the false narrative of Trump and his right wing allies that Joe has dementia or has lost a step. The âsleepy Joeâ narrative was destroyed last night. It wonât fly. Trump people now need to scramble to find other attack points.

This virtual DNC should make a difference with the persuadables among more traditional center-right Republicans and independents. We'll see. GBG, I know you watched a lot and evidently found it well done. You -- a retired securities analyst who has a ton of time for TV even without coronavirus (no kids, no job, an HOA that takes care of yard work and such) -- are far far far far away from the typical US resident. I'm very partisan and I watched a total of about 30 minutes (although partly because I had a music gig yesterday and had to rehearse some the previous days) and found the sterile atmosphere pretty weird. I'm skeptical there was significant viewing by US "centrists," most of whom are relatively apolitical people who vote "for the man, not the party" (note the use of "man" because my experience is that most of these folks are culturally conservative and a tough sell for the modern Democratic party). But we'll see. If the coronavirus and its impacts continues to be a big problem over the next couple of months (the NFL will be a big litmus test), Biden wins. If it subsides and life starts moving toward normal, we're looking at the same election as 2016, where Biden wins the popular vote and the electoral college is a toss-up to be decided by close counts in a few states (due to the idiocy of winner take all state electorate rules that wipe out the presidential vote cast by almost half of all US voters).
