Harrison Wind said emphatically last night that CG won’t be with the Nuggets next year. As if he’s heard that. It’s true that Pickett is under regular contact with the Nuggets and CG isn’t, but Pickett can always be traded this summer, and Gillespie could be upgraded to a regular NBA contract. So I’d have liked Adam Mares or someone sitting next to him to push back on Wind and ask him why he says that.

The DNVR people aren't worth considering in the first place.
He probably is just assuming CG will get poached as Jack White did at the beginning of this season. Remember last season when nobody at MHS or DNVR even understood how two way contracts worked? They both thought that they were still limited to 45 days with the NBA squad, which hasn't been the case since before the bubble.

But in any case, 6/29 and 6/30 could drastically reshape our franchise.
On those dates: DeAndre Jordan becomes an unrestricted free agent Justin Holliday becomes an unrestricted free agent Reggie Jackson's one year player option is due Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's one year player option is due Vlatko Cancar's one year team option is due Collin Gillespie is due a qualifying offer Braxton Key is due a qualifying offer Jay Huff is due a qualifying offer

CG is legit, been on this for a while Great to see him finally 100%. He put on a clinic out there. He said in his own words last night that he still has bad days where he wakes up very sore and he hopes to continue to improve the leg as the year goes along. So he's not 100% yet. He said at the beginning of the year he was hoping to be 100% by May, so we'll see how he looks then.

Wind is a credentialed reporter and has sources in the Nuggets organization. Now, I’m sure Calvin Booth doesn’t discuss this stuff with him, so his sources are not at the top of the food chain. But he’s around the staff and gets some sense of things. Any of us can act superior but he knows more than we do about what is being discussed in the Nuggets’ organization. Prior to the trade deadline he reported that the Nuggets were quite unlikely to do anything — even something around the edges — and he was correct about that. That said — I don’t know why the Nuggets would have already decided Gillespie won’t be back after this season. He’ll be a restricted free agent even if his status doesn’t change the remainder of this season. And from what I’ve seen he’s a legit shooter, has solid if unspectacular PG skills, and has a good head and personality for the game. He seems pretty similar to Monte Morris. I realize that Booth prioritizes size for position, but you also have to have shooting and court spacing in the modern NBA and the Nuggets are actually kind of short on shooters. So I hope the FO isn’t being too stubborn in its assessment that Gillespie can’t ever get a roster spot as a 3rd PG.

The DNVR guys pushed the narrative all summer long that Pickett was going to take Reggie's job. Sorry, I don't give them any credit for anything. They're idiots. I predicted we wouldn't make any trades either, doesn't make me a reporter. Just means I have basic common sense.
Adrian Dater occasionally gets a story right about the Avs too, but I still don't believe anything he says until a real reporter says it too. Because he's a clown, just like the entire DNVR crew.

having a TJ McConnell level of player on a low-cost contract seems like a good thing to do. Wouldn't let him go unless we *really* need the spot. Even having so many other PGs in the fold...

CG's shooting has improved as the year has gone along. He shot under 30% from 3 in the G-League Showcase (first 4 games), over 38% in the regular season (most recent 7). Still a small sample size overall, though. Shooting over 45% in the NBA, but again, small sample.
I think Gillespie is a much better passer and creator than either Morris or McConnell, though. His main problem on offense is dribbling violations -- he tends to get called on a first step travel a lot. If he can eliminate that from his game it'll cut his turnovers in half. He does also get called for more offensive fouls than most point guards I've seen, but part of that is because he actually sets screens.

If CG is a better passer than TJ, then that’s a great passer (TJ’s assist/TO for his career, per-36, is 8.4/2.7) and we have to do everything possible to keep him next season, upgrade his contract to a regular NBA contract, and even find a way to upgrade him for the coming postseason as insurance in case either Jamal or RJ were unavailable. Perhaps we can still waive Cancar with an understanding he will be brought back? I’m not sure I’m fully comfortable relying on both Murray and Jackson staying healthy and delivering 16 playoff wins.

The DNVR guys pushed the narrative all summer long that Pickett was going to take Reggie's job. Sorry, I don't give them any credit for anything. That was only Adam Mares (not the “DNVR guys”) and his personal wishful thinking about Pickett before he (or Gillespie) had practiced or played a minute with the Nuggets or the Gold. I did think it was dumb that his rose color glasses prevented him from seeing that right now Pickett’s lack of handle skills prevents him from being a viable NBA PG. My take is that even at the college level, Pickett’s “booty ball” game was an accommodation for his high dribble as he used his stocky body to protect the ball. If he cannot improve his handle a lot and pretty soon, he’s going to bust out of the NBA. Mares let his rooting interest in Pickett color his judgment about him, but it was just his personal opinion — as I remember it he wasn’t claiming to be reporting anything from Nuggets’ sources.
