Exactly Lothar. And now, the last spots in the Western Conference is opener than ever. Only Spurs, Dallas, Lakers and OKC are really good teams.

Doubt the Jazz do that.

It´s true, but they are now in a radical rebuilding mode. And their main asset beside draft picks is a 19 years old PF. They definitly should be trying to trade Paul Millsap.

Good deal for Nets. IMO, they got a better player than Melo, who has a year left on his contract, for a cheaper price, and who plays a more "premium" position than Melo.

I guess the Jazz can/should use the same logic we used with Melo: they would have lost him in a little over a year for nothing, and this way they got some young assets with upside. They should probably try to flip Harris.

Good deal for both teams, considering the situation of each

There is no way Williams will sign with NJ.

You´re suspect.

Why because I think Melo is better than Williams? Or at worst they are about even?

Lots of ex-girlfriend hate going on.

I would suspect if the Jazz were to trade one of their bigs, it'll probably be Jefferson as he hasn't worked out to what they wanted. If they're gonna rebuild, they'll probably keep Millsap and work a frontcourt rotation of Millsap/Favors. Although undersized, but not indifferent to what they're running now with Jefferson/Millsap.

But yeah, this came out of nowhere. All the attention was on Melo and this went under the radar. Good job, Porky.

We won't be able to judge the deal until 2012. That said it's a highly risky deal for the Nets but one that they had no choice in doing. If Williams resigns with them then it was a good deal. If he doesn't then they gave up the #2 pick, a lottery pick and a former all star PG for a player for a 18 month rental.

But the Nets had no choice but to take that risk because no star with options wants to go there. So their only avenue to getting a star is to get one under contract and hope that they fall in love with them and decide to stay when they're eligible to leave.

Props to our front office. They got the Nets to offer up more for our inferior player.

Porky's got a year and a half to pull something off, something to convince Williams Brooklyn is the place to be. He pulled of a major coup for DWill already in his short tenure, its not a far cry to imagine he could pull something off given that amount of time frame.

The other key is to make sure you get one star in there first, then others will be easier to get.

Not hard to imagine the Nets being able to make a trade revolving around Lopez and picks for Howard next year.

I was thinking the same thing, Howard already has an extension on the table, and the Nets will have the cap space after the season is over to be able to absorb the difference in salaries.

The Nets might be in a weird position. In order to keep Williams they might need the owners to invoke a franchise tag. But if there is a franchise tag then they won't be able to land another superstar (Howard).

If they land another superstar Williams isn't going anywhere. Howard and Williams would be worlds better than Melo and Amare....and right on par with the Heat.

It won't be as easy as you like to think. Williams won't commit to stay without another superstar joining him. That will be hard via trade as they just traded away their good assets to get him. I guess they could trade Lopez but like Denver Orlando likely won't want to trade Howard within the conference. Orlando will also have the option of trading him to the Lakers which are Howard's preferred destination. LA can offer a better package centered around Bynum. Chicago, another destination that Howard likes, can also offer a package around Noah.

That leaves free agency. Overlooking the fact that Proky has been a massive failure in attracting superstars after talking to them, the problem is unless D. Williams firmly commits to NJ beforehand with an extension Howard won't seriously consider NJ. The same thing happened to Cleveland last year. Nobody seriously looked at them because Lebron hadn't pledged to stay there. Also Howard's people have never mentioned the Nets as a destination. They've mentioned LA (as in Lakers), Chicago, and NY (as in Knicks). The Nets make their usual assumption that when a player mentions NY as an option it means them as well.

It should be interesting to follow. Williams isn't eligible to sign a contract extension with NJ until July the 19th. If he refuses to sign it at that point then its likely the Nets traded away the #2 pick, a former all star, and a lottery pick all for their very own Carmelo Anthony situation in 2012.

Care to wager me on Williams signing that contract on or around the 19th?

From a basketball point of view , having Deron and Howard in Jersey to battle the Knicks would be great drama, the kind that the NBA likes to see and attracts casual fans. I am sure Deron and Howard can talk one on one and decide if building their BETTER super team on the other side of the bridge would be something they are interested in. Question is who is the third piece?

That's what bugs me....you don't need three superstar, #1 option guys on your team to be successful. As a matter of fact, most teams are better off with just two, and then supporting role players. I personally think the heat would be better off had they just signed Lebron, and then used the money they gave Bosh on better secondary pieces, who can rebound and play defense.

Williams/Howard would be an amazing combo, because it's the PG/C combo that all teams covet. That's how you win. They could fill out the middle spots with a couple good scoring wings and a decent power forward, and instantly be a legit contender.
